There are a variety of classes taught at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. These include both the core curriculum and the electives, available from third year forward. In the fifth year, students take the  L.A.M.P. (Levels of Aptitude in Magical Performance) exams to determine whether they can achieve a score high enough to continue to N.I.C.E.-level (Nearly Impossible Competency Exam) courses in the remaining two years. Some classes, including core classes, may be dropped in the sixth year. Specialized courses such as Alchemy become available in the sixth year provided there is sufficient demand. All students do, however, have a choice to drop a class if they become a burden, aside from the core curriculum.

Electives are courses you can choose, while compulsory courses are mandatory courses that you must study to meet your program requirements. Electives, when added to the compulsory courses, make up the total number of units needed to complete your degree.

Note: The sixth and seventh years are when students tend to begin Field-Specific courses, as well as embark on internships in fields of interest. Because of this, at the end of the fifth year after the LAMP (Levels of Aptitude in Magical Performance) tests are administered, students are brought into a meeting with a counselor (often their Head of House) to discuss possible career futures. Some of the “required” classes for these two years can be dropped based on the schedule and agenda of the student in question, as well as their LAMP test scores.

Extracurricular Activities are those that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school education, performed by students. Extracurricular activities exist for all students. Such activities are generally voluntary (as opposed to mandatory), social, philanthropic, and often involve others of the same age. Students and staff direct these activities under faculty sponsorship, although student-led initiatives, such as independent newspapers, are very common.
